The German advance through Northern France had seen the retreat and surrounding of British and French troops at the beaches of Dunkirk. On 26 May 1940, Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of Dunkirk began.

Over 300 000 troops needed every type of ship available to ferry the men back to England and safety. Over 9 days merchant ships, fishing trawlers, tugs and pleasure boats all joined the Royal Navy’s warships. This unlikely armada braved Luftwaffe (German Air force) and submarine attack to collect as many men as possible. Although continually attacked, the majority of troops were rescued to fight another day. Above the beaches the RAF fought ferociously with the Luftwaffe to protect the evacuees but low fog has often seen their role under appreciated.
