Landings and landing craft
The Great War presented the problem of opposed landings, never before experienced to such an extent by the Allied Forces.
Much of the equipment used was makeshift and improvised. Newer landing craft such as the ‘Z’ Craft, or ‘Beetles’, capable of carrying 500 men made their appearance during the Gallipoli Campaign (1915), they were however, too late for the initial landings.
The Royal Marines really proved their capabilities for staging water-bourne attacks during the Zeebrugge Raid on St George's Day, 1918.
