New equipment allows trapped submariners to escape

Submarine disasters typically resulted in a heavy loss of life and this therefore led to the development of various devices to enable trapped submariners to escape. Most of these earlier attempts were heavy and took up valuable internal space in the submarine. However, the early 1920s saw the development of a new escape device by the Siebe Gorman diving company, known as the Davis Submarine Escape Apparatus (DSEA).
