Falklands and Beyond: Contemporary role of Submarine Service

Submarine operations in contemporary conflicts

Submarines continue to have an important role within the contemporary Royal Navy. During this period, British submarines have been involved in various types of conflict. Britain was the first navy to use nuclear submarines in a war situation in the Falklands conflict of 1982. Submarines helped land Special Air Service units off Iraq and Kuwait during the Gulf War in 1991. British nuclear boats also launched cruise missiles as part of the Kosovo campaign.
